Awards $1,000 Scholarships to Graduating High School Students
Derry Medical Center (DMC) and Londonderry Family Practice Center (LFPC) recently awarded three educational scholarships to graduating seniors from Pinkerton Academy, Londonderry High School and Salem High School. The awards were in the amount of $1000 each.
Aliandra Chiampa of Londonderry High School, Andrea Desautel of Pinkerton Academy and Chelsea Johnston of Salem High School were this year’s recipients of the DMC/LFPC annual scholarship award. These outstanding students met the scholarship’s conditions, which require that the recipient rank in the top 25 percent of his or her class and plan to pursue a career in the healing art of medicine.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to give back to our community in a way that supports tomorrow’s medical professionals,” said Dennis G. Rork, M.D., a board certified Family Practice Physician practicing at the Londonderry Family Practice Center.
The $1,000 awards allow the students to use the funds toward future educational expenses. This fall, Chiampa will be attending the University of Rhode Island as a Pharmacy major; Desautel will be attending St. Anselm’s College as a nursing major, and Johnston will be attending Boston University.
Medical Community Supports Derry Rail Trail Alliance
Community residents are finally able to take advantage of the beautiful spring weather, and can be seen biking, running and walking throughout the area. Thanks to the generosity of the medical community, additional progress will be made on the Derry Rail Trail, promising continued recreational opportunities in the days ahead.
Concord Orthopedics, Derry Medical Center, Granite State Gastroenterology, Spindel Eye Associates and several individual physicians have joined together to support the Derry Rail Trail Alliance in the amount of over $10,000.
“We are so grateful for this level of support from our local medical community,” says Erich Whitney, President of the Derry Rail Trail Alliance. “This project will benefit so many people in our area. It’s an opportunity to turn a small piece of town land into a recreational resource not only for the residents of Derry but as a regional recreation destination which will benefit local businesses. The medical community has truly taken a leadership position on this project.”
John P. Daley, MD, a Family Practice Physician with Derry Medical Center adds, “I believe the rail trail offers limitless recreational opportunities for all ages. As a physician, I believe the rail trail will improve the health of the community, by inducing more people to get out and walk or bike.”
The Derry Rail Trail Alliance was formed in October, 2007 as a volunteer organization with the mission of reconstructing the Derry section of the old Manchester and Lawrence branch of the Boston and Maine Railroad and creating a recreational trail for cyclists and pedestrians.
Some of this trail has already been paved as part of the Derry Bike Path. The group’s first goal is to see this path extended all the way to Windham to connect to the Windham Rail Trail. For more information about the Derry Rail Trail Alliance, visit their website at www.derryrailtrail.org.

John Daley, MD, Elected to Board of Derry Rail Trail Alliance
John P. Daley, M.D., a board certified Family Practice physician with Derry Medical Associates, was recently appointed to the Board of Directors of the Derry Rail Trail Alliance. Dr. Daley has been a member of Rails-to-Trails Conservancy for 12 years, and will serve a two year term on the Derry Rail Trail Alliance Board of Directors.
When asked about his interest in the Derry Rail Trail Alliance, Dr. Daley explains: "I predominantly biked to school or work from age 12 to age 28, so I appreciate the benefit of a flat, paved, traffic-free path for getting around town. I discovered the rail trail as a fabulous running path, albeit a little uneven. As an avid biker, runner, and cross-country skier, I believe the rail trail offers limitless recreational opportunities for all ages. As a physician, I believe the rail trail will improve the health of the community, by inducing more people to get out and walk or bike. As a father, I am looking forward to biking with my young children on a hill-free route away from cars. And as a long-time member of Rails-to-Trails, I look forward to making one happen in my own community"
Dr. Daley joined the Derry Medical Center in 1994. He earned his Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Harvard College, Cambridge, MA, and his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Wisconsin Medical School in Madison, WI. He completed his residency at Brown University, Providence, RI, and is Board Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. He presently serves as chief of staff at Parkland Medical Center, and also serves on the board of Community Health Services in town.

Weight Sense at Derry Medical Marks Milestone
Participants Have Lost a Ton of Weight
With beach weather just around the corner, patients of Weight Sense at the Derry Medical Center have more to celebrate than just the arrival of warm weather. As a group, they have dropped 2,000 pounds since the program began in October, 2007.
“What makes Weight Sense different,” says Sue Olson, Program Manager, “is that it is a medically based weight-loss treatment program that combines a nutritionally complete meal plan with intensive lifestyle education, personalized attention and follow-up support.”
“We want the Weight Sense experience to be successful for each patient,” Olson explains, “and tailor the program in a way that helps each person achieve their personal goals. We know that sheer will power often isn’t enough, and we teach techniques and skills that help our clients lose weight and keep it off.”
The approach clearly works. Joyce Wheeler of Derry (NH) has lost 50 pounds in 24 weeks. “I look better and feel better,” she says. “My cholesterol is lower, my blood pressure is lower, I have a better self image and I am a better example for my kids.”
Andrew Emerson of Hudson (NH) credits the Weight Sense staff for his tremendous success. He says, “My doctor suggested I try Weight Sense as a last ditch try to lose weight without surgery. My goal of losing 140 lbs. seemed daunting at first, though five months in, I am already down almost 100 pounds… The support system that is set up by the Weight Sense staff is phenomenal! Each staff member is knowledgeable about the process and unbelievably supportive as well!
“I am excited to be part of a wonderful program like this that helps patients of Derry Medical Center/Londonderry Family Practice feel so much better both physically and emotionally,” says John Daley, MD, Medical Director. I think we succeed because patients do not go hungry – they can eat as much as they want of nutritional, low-calorie food that is satisfying. Furthermore, I think the wonderful support of our awesome staff is just what people need to succeed, and our medical supervision by nurses, physicians, and physician assistants makes this different from other weight loss programs.”
Free information sessions are held on Mondays from noon to 1PM and on Thursdays from 5:30 PM – 6:30 PM at Weight Sense at the Derry Medical Center Office at Overlook Medical Park in Derry. If you are interested in learning more about Weight Sense, or if you’d like to register for an information session, please call (603) 537-3033.
